Fumi Iseki, and his team at Tokyo University have developed a way to stream real time animation from Microsoft’s Kinect to Second Life. In the Second Life Open Source developers group, he posted a link to the video demonstration:

“Hello everyone. We are developing the system of real time animation on SL with Kinect. Please see http://www.nsl.tuis.ac.jp/xoops/modules/x_movie/x_movie_view.php?ci.... Is this interesting?”

The Project's wiki is under construction at http://www.nsl.tuis.ac.jp/xoops/modules/xpwiki/?SLKinect.

amazing, wonders what the future will bring... perhaps a set of immersive 3D goggles and then we could really 'run about' in there, tho id be concerned about our RL furniture haha
Or our real life necks.... no, I think we'd have a platform or a booth we enter with treadmills in all four directions and an elevator that would lift us up and down when we want to fly.  :) :) Good exercise, as compared to the couch potato SL experience at present.

This is interesting. Yes. I still can't fathom how it works from the websites, but I'm curious about the future of this.
The company has a Windows version in the pipeline: http://www.gamesradar.com/kinect-windows-officially-announced-2012

I'm thinking about how I could use this to create machinima. One of the trickiest things is creating animations that are correct for the scene. Sometimes you can get pre-made animations or work with an animator to create them for you, but that takes a lot of time. Using this (even if its only client-side) could allow you to be your characters and do animations on-the-fly. I see tremendous possibility here for the machinimatographer.
Ditto.  I imagine it won't come cheap.
